On Saturday Feb. 2, 2013, the Knights of Columbus of St. Thomas Aquinas Church will host the annual Charlotte Ultra Run, which will consist of a 50k race and a USA Track & Field certified 10k fun run to benefit local charities. Both races will start at the Countryside Montessori School and will continue along the beautiful Mallard Creek Greenway.

The 50k race has received a bronze level certification from the International Association of Ultra Runners (IAU), the international governing body for ultra-running. “ Charlotte has fast runners who consistently turn in world-class times,  but they don’t show up on the World 50k Rankings” said Finian Curran,  director of CUR. “Our event offers the opportunity for these marathon runners to place in the world rankings in 2013. We anticipate that our event will be selected by the IAU as one of the 20 qualifying races  for the World Championship in 2013”.

Charlotte Ultra Run has secured several local sponsors, including Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC, Tyber Creek Pub, Prohibition, Dandelion Market, Connelly’s Irish Pub and Run For Your Life.

The presenting sponsor is OhYeah! Nutrition.  Lindsay Gabriel, community relations coordinator for OhYeah! Nutrition  said “We’re excited to partner with the Charlotte Ultra Run this year. Not many people know we are in Charlotte’s backyard and this is a great opportunity for us to support a community event. The Ultra Run partners well with our brand of award winning nutrition shakes and protein bars that can help runners train on a higher level”.

Both events will benefit charities supported by the Knights of Columbus. These include Holy Angels in Belmont, Catholic Charities, Nevins Center and the Least Among My Brethren (L.A.M.B.) Foundation, which benefits Special Olympic Athletes. Although the Charlotte Ultra Run is a charity event, it is also designed to encourage health awareness in our community. Our philosophy is to help promote a healthy lifestyle by offering a variety health education topics via our website, Face Book page and Twitter.
