Chatter: Chances of Chris Paul Joining Bobcats Slim
CHARLOTTE, NC - You never say never, but the chances of Chris Paul joining the Charlotte Bobcats don't look good. That is, if you believe what you read.
Nobody nationally, and I mean nobody, appears to be giving Charlotte any chance in the CP3 sweepstakes.
Last week, word came down that Paul is asking the New Orleans Hornets to trade him. Since then, the Knicks, Magic, Lakers and even Trailblazers have been viewed as potential landing spots... not Charlotte.
Yes, Chris Paul is from Winston-Salem. Yes, Chris Paul played at Wake Forest. Yes, Chris Paul sat beside Bobcats owner Michael Jordan during the Bobcats-Magic playoff series. Still, the mainstream media has all but avoided the Chris Paul-to-Charlotte scenario. However, several popular blogs have addressed the opportunity.
Bleacher Report's Tim Wood lists the odds of every team snagging Paul. Wood says there's "definitely a want" from Michael Jordan when it comes to Paul, but "the team is too cap maxed already and (doesn't) have enough value for New Orleans."
Wood suggests "the Hornets will need to shed cap space if they make they make the deal, and Charlotte can't take on a contract like Emeka Okafor." Welcome back 'Mek!
More importantly, what does Paul want? It's clear he wants to win now and with the recent trend of building super teams, Charlotte would have to become more attractive to the young point guard. Just to have a shot, the 'Cats would need to clear even more space to acquire another big name, such as Carmelo Anthony. But, if the often-recited rumor of Paul's toast at 'Melo's wedding is true, Charlotte is in big trouble.
Facing reality, there's a better shot Paul ends up in Orlando to team with Dwight Howard and Rashard Lewis or, better yet, in New York with Amar'e Stoudemire. If the Knicks are the final choice, they would likely ship newly signed PG Raymond Felton to New Orleans.
Wouldn't that be ironic?
