Closing Arguments Underway in MacDonald Hearing

 WILMINGTON, NC -- Closing arguments in the Jeffrey MacDonald hearing have opened with defense attorneys saying DNA evidence and new statements are grounds to overturn his murder convictions.
 
   A U.S. District Court judge heard arguments Tuesday from MacDonald lawyer Gordon Widenhouse, who focused on testimony from Jerry Leonard, who represented Helena Stoeckley in August 1979.
 
   Widenhouse also focused on statements from Stoeckley's mother. Both women are dead, but Leonard's testimony and the mother's statement said Stoeckley admitted that she was in the MacDonald home the night of the murders.
 
   The 68-year-old MacDonald was convicted of killing his pregnant wife and two daughters at their Fort Bragg home in 1970. MacDonald, who was an Army surgeon, has maintained his family was killed by a band of intruders who burst into his home.
