CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- CMPD has arrested a suspect in a rape case that happened 21 years ago.

Detectives with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Sexual Assault Cold Case Unit arrested Drayton Thompson, 42, for his involvement in a rape case that occurred at the 2600 block of Beechnut Drive in August of 1991.

On August 12, 1991, the victim was abducted by two male suspects driving a vehicle from the 2600 block of Beechnut Drive.  The victim was taken to an unknown location where she was sexually and physically assaulted.  The suspects then released the female and she contacted authorities.  Detectives responded to the scene to investigate, but were unable to identify any suspects at the time.

Detectives with the CMPD Sexual Assault Cold Case Unit were able to re-examine the evidence for the incident and submit the DNA to the CMPD lab.  The lab then reported that the DNA evidence submitted matched that of Drayton Thompson. Warrants were immediately obtained for Thompson and he was arrested by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team with the assistance of the U.S. Marshal’s Service early Tuesday morning. Thompson was then transported to the Law Enforcement Center where he was interviewed by detectives.

Thompson has been charged with two counts of 1st degree rape, two counts of 1st degree sex offense, kidnapping and felony conspiracy.
