Charlotte, NC - Congressman Todd Akin's comment was heard around the country. Congressman Todd Akin says, "From what I understand from doctors, that's really rare. If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to shut that whole thing down."

Uptown resident Geneiva McNeale says, "So you are clearly out of touch with the issue of rape, as a woman's issue and the reality of what rape actually is." Uptown resident Olivia Wells says, "Obviously they haven't thought it through. Its like speaking, without thinking."

Sheree DeMao has been a local business owner for 28 years. As a woman and an independent voter, DeMao believed Akin's comments were misguided. DeMao says, "Where my ire is up is we're the focus seems to be in this election."

DeMao believes the same issues that affect men affect women too, but says candidates only focus on one thing when it comes to reaching the women vote. DeMao says, "Pro life, pro choice, rape. They think these issues are what is going to get us to vote for them or against their opponent."

Until the smoke clears, DeMao is still undecided this election year, but says this comment has forced her to read up on the candidates before she votes.
