Copper Theft Crackdown
Charlotte, NC - A legal crack down is coming for copper thieves. Starting October first, a new law goes into effect that requires people selling copper to give up more information about themselves. Copper sales will also go from a cash business to a check transaction. Scrap metal dealers say copper sale is big business. Some even call it a precious metal like gold, because its traded internationally and can cost upwards of 3 dollars a pound. Jack Agnew, from E-metals in South Charlotte says, "You can get to a thousand dollars really fast on something like this and anything that adds up that quick, I consider precious." Under the new law, scrap dealers like Agnew will have to provide more documentation when buying copper. Agnew says, "With copper and the new regulations you have to fingerprint, photo id, I mean its pretty stiff, so if you steal it, you're going to get caught." |
