Cornelius Police Arrest Suspect in Multiple Break-Ins

CORNELIUS, NC -- Police have arrested a man they believe is responsibile for multiple break-ins. According to authorities, John Stamey was found in a woman's garage on October 4, and left aftershe confronted him.

The resident contacted the Cornelius Police Department when she noticed her purse and cell phone were missing.

At that time, police received multiple calls from other residents to report car break-ins in the area.

Officers, with the help of the Mooresville Police Department K-9 unit and officers from the Huntersville and Davidson Police Departments, set up a perimeter in the area to search for Stamey. The search was unsuccessful.

Cornelius Police continued to receive calls on Friday, October 5, for more car break-ins in the Jetton Cove/Silver Quay area. A cell phone was recovered on Silver Quay that belonged to the first victim. A resident on Southport Drive contacted police about a stolen vehicle. While responding to the stolen vehicle call, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) responded to a vehicle crash on Perkins Drive in North Charlotte.
 
The vehicle that crashed was the one stolen from Southport. John Stamey, the suspect,  was detained by CMPD. Cornelius Police arrested Stamey. The stolen vehicle was towed to the Cornelius Police Headquarters.

Police discovered property belonging to other break-in victims, while they searched the vehicle.

John Stamey has been charged with 17 counts of Felony - 9 counts of Breaking and Entering a Motor Vehicle, 4 counts of Larceny from Motor Vechile, 2 counts of 1st Degree Burglary, 1 count of Larceny of Motor Vehicle, and 1 count of Possession of Stolen Vehicle.
