Future Transit Plans Could Lead Charlotte UndergroundCHARLOTTE- Charlotte area leaders are discussing the possibility of an underground tunnel for the Queen City. A possible plan for the future that could offer commuters a new path to Uptown. South Charlotte resident, Andrew Wilen says there are not enough options when it comes to transportation, “If you want to come into the city, you have to take the light rail; it's just too much to drive." While the light rail may be the main means of transportation now, in the future it could be tracks that go underground. Matthews Mayor, Jim Taylor says the discussions are in premature phases but it is something the Queen City will need to deal with, “There were discussions about trying to connect where the blue line is currently and where the gateway center is.” The city and regional leaders are examining the possibility of taking to the tunnels when it comes to connecting the blue line to the gateway center. Taylor says we need to look at other options, “Our roads are packed, we have pollution issues all around the state, we will need to look at alternatives." The connection would go from the general area of the Time Warned Cable arena to I-77. Still, this is all part of a Comprehensive Transportation Plan; one that is much more complex and poses many issues going forward. Commissioner Harold Cogdell says cost is a big concern, "There are some cost issues that would be present when we talk about the possibility of going underground." Still, Charlotte residents like Andrew Wilen can't help but be excited, "It's what Charlotte is missing. Multiple lines to travel on would be advantageous for the city." County Commissioners say we could possibly see a plan like this implemented over the next 25 to 30 years. The Comprehensive Transportation Plan identifies the future transportation system need and includes highways, public transportation, rail and bicycle facilities needed to serve the anticipated travel demand. |
