CHARLOTTE, N.C.-One man was arrested and charged with the shooting death of a security guard outside a restaurant earlier this week in East Charlotte. The Security guard is one of 63 killed so far this year in the United States. The disturbing trend is already ahead of last year. Growing at an alarming rate. "We're putting the average Joe out there in situations where law enforcement used to be," said Private Officer International CEO Rick McCann. McCann's firm tracks deaths and injuries of security guards across the country. He says security guards have been forced to take on the responsibilities of police officers eliminated by recent layoffs and budget cuts. But, McCann says those security guards don't receive proper training. "Most people out in the public or in a shopping mall. They are expecting to be protected by that security officer and they are expecting he is properly trained which isn't always the case," said McCann. North Carolina doesn't require any training to be licensed as a security guard. To carry a firearm, guards only need four hours of training. East Charlotte resident Tiffany Brown said security guards in Uptown Charlotte are a common sight, "That's a major obstacle to take on and seeing that you are in the position to keep people safe you should be giving proper training to fulfill those duties," Brown said. McCann said an effort is underway right now to increase guard training requirements in North Carolina. |
