CHARLOTTE, N.C.--A caravan of two trucks removed what was left of two cars involved in a deadly car crash. It happened on Mallard Creek Road near Sawgrass Ridge Place in Northeast Charlotte at 11:30 Sunday morning. "Now I have to go all the way around prosperity church and ridge road,"
said Northeast Charlotte Resident Aaron Watson.
Drivers were forced to detour around the crash for more than five hours while police investigated.
"So it must be really bad...wow," said Northeast Charlotte Resident Alexandra Boahene.
Police say Lasonya Thompson drove her Nissan Armada left of the double yellow line and hit a Saturn head-on. The other driver died. Medic took two passengers in the Saturn to Carolinas Medical Center with serious injuries. Three boys and a girl in Thompson's car were treated for minor injuries.
"It's definitely a dangerous road. You have to be careful out here," said Northeast Charlotte Resident Nathan Sternagle. Sternagle and several neighbors we talked to say the road is a popular alternate route to Concord Mills Mall. They say it has had two recent crashes and traffic problems.
"There's definitely people flying around the corner, driving crazy. The potholes definitely don't help," said Sternagle.
Police say alcohol doesn't appear to have been a factor. We reached out to CMPD's Major Crash investigation Unit and NCDOT about the neighbors concerns. Our requests for comment have not yet been returned.
