Diverse Marriages Triple in Mecklenburg County
Matthews, NC - Charlotte lawyer Robin Krcelic and her husband Shawn have been married almost a year. She says, "I remember being teased in junior high for liking a white boy. But nowadays, I think you like who you like." Robin and Shawn are one of many interracial couples living in Charlotte. But they say it's not always easy. Krcelic says, "His family has been great, every now and then we get stares, but it doesn't bother me, I'm used to it." According to Mecklenburg County, Robin and her husband are one of many. In 2011, one of ten couples were interracial. This year, that number tripled. Wedding planner Anne Markey says she's seeing more diversity in her couples too. Markey says, "I feel like people are definitely celebrating their diversity and background a lot more." Markey says more couples are including their ethnicities into their weddings, which helps make her job even better. Markey says, "I don't want to sound cliche but it almost is a magical moment when you see these two cultures come together."
