CORNELIUS, NC- Randy and Kelly Waugh want to turn an old sports bar on Statesville Road in Cornelius into Lucky Dog Bark and Brew - a bar that welcomes two and four-legged friends. "Myself, Hampton Inn, Napa next door. Nobody really wants a lot of dog barking or a lot of noise all day long. There's a noise ordinance in every town in the area, including Cornelius," said Neal Jackson, owner of Mattress Express. In a letter to the Cornelius town board planning director, Hampton Inn writes, “This could be a nightmare scenario for our business” and “If just a small percentage of our customers complained, it could mean thousands of dollars worth of refunds.” Waugh says the hotels is over 400 feet from the site and although the bar would be open until midnight, she's confident the noise won't be a problem. "We certainly don't want to hurt their business. We just want to work with them by bringing them in at reasonable hours and making sure if a dogs excessively barking, will bring them in,” said Waugh. The bar would triple as a boutique, grooming salon, and doggy daycare opening at 7:30a.m. Even though they're getting backlash from nearby businesses, over 300 residents signed a petition in support. Some of the comments say the noise couldn't be any louder than trucks and cars on I-77 and others say the dog bar could be good for the community. "It would be nice on a hot day to take the dog there and get a beer," said Michael Jackson, a Cornelius resident. The Town of Cornelius board of commissioners is voting on the business plan Monday. Both Hampton Inn management and Mattress Express owners say they will be at the meeting to voice concerns. |
