CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Love Project: Beautiful from the Inside Out features domestic violence survivors. The photo and video exhibit was the creation of artist and domestic violence survivor A.M. Stewart. The South Charlotte resident said, "I wanted to document photos of people who have The Mecklenburg County Domestic Violence Advisory Board says in 2011, Police responded to 393 more calls and made 53 more arrests than in 2010. At the same time, the board says more women were arrested for domestic violence. Stewart credits the increase in arrests with an increase in awareness, "The more we talk about it, the more we feel comfortable dealing with the issue," she said. Stewart said domestic violence isn't something that just affects individuals, but the entire community. "These are real people with real experiences and our experiences aren't that different from each other. We all experience some hurt and pain in our lives." Some positive changes in handling domestic violence: there's a new full time advocate helping people in North Mecklenburg County.
