CHARLOTTE, N.C.--Warm weather paved teh way for a resurfacing project on Independence Boulevard this weekend. As crews worked, drivers sat and waited--as long as 45 minutes on average--just to get through.

Last Wednesday, NCDOT issued a press release advisory. On Saturday, reader boards warned of major delays and suggested alternate routes. Drivers like Sean McIlwaian say it wasn't enough.
"No advance warning. Right when you got on the highway, it says delayed. No timing. No nothing," said the Ballantyne resident.

While Sean turned the shoulder of the road into an additional lane, "Oh this is miserable. Hold for laughter," Matthews resident Trevor Kent decided it was time to pound the pavement. "Literally as soon as we pulled on to 74 and saw how bad it was. Just decided, you know at this point. I'm gonna start walking," he said.

Leaving his friend, Jim Hager, behind the wheel. We asked him, "What do you think about the fact he's beating you right now?" and he said, "It's sad."

Proving the best way to get where you need to go this weekend, might just be on foot. "I mean it's quite a ways but at the current pace of traffic,  I'm sure I'll make it there before him," said Kent.

NCDOT says it's contractor is responsible for all traffic control measures. All lanes are scheduled to be open by 6 a.m. Monday.
