ANSON COUNTY, N.C.--Did you feel the earth shaking Monday evening?  The US Geological Survey confirms a 2.9 magnitude earthquake just after 6pm Monday near the town of Morven in Anson County. That is about 53 miles from Charlotte and 34 miles from Monroe.

A 2.9 on the Richter Scale is enough to feel, but not do any damage. Each number on the scale is an increase of 40 times the amount of energy. A quake ranging from 4-5 would do some moderate damage. To put into perspective how small this quake was, the Japan quake was 200 times stronger.

Our area is no stanger to earthquakes, as we typically see small quakes each year. Many faults run through our area. However, the greatest risk for big quakes is down along the South Carolina coast. The great Charleston Earthquake of 1886 is a good example of what can happen in that area. A 7.3 magnitude quake rocked the old city on August 31, 1886 killing 100 people.
