MATTHEWS, NC- Some local teens say they know how and where to get fake pot.
"Just ask for legal. That's what everyone calls it. Legal," said Alex Carr, a Mint Hill resident and former CMS student.
They say one place to get synthetic marijuana is a convenience store on Independence Boulevard in Matthews. It's just around the corner from Butler High School.
Some parents say it's being sold too close to schools and the temptation is too great.
"If it were in another part of town where they had to travel to get it, I think that would be much better," said Nancy Nestor, a Mint Hill resident.
Doctors say it has serious and sometimes suicidal effects.
The warning label on the potpourri reads “not for human consumption,” but former Independence High students say more teens are smoking it because you can still pass a drug test to play a sport or a get a job. Plus, they say it's good for money-tight teens.
"Three grams of some legal stuff at the store for 15.99. That's cheaper than what the illegal stuff costs on the street," said Tyler Goulet, an East Charlotte resident.
Matthews police say they made two arrests in march. A spokesperson tells FOX Charlotte they're aware it's being sold close to butler, but don't want to comment because it's an ongoing investigation.
"It's marketing. You try to put it in a place where it's going to be... where you're going to be able to sell it," said Nestor.
