Family Members Say Police Plan to Charge Boyfriend in Shelby Murder of 17-Year-Old Girl
SHELBY, NC - Family members of a 17-year-old girl murdered in Shelby tell WCCB police plan to charge her boyfriend with the crime. Hanna Bickley's boyfriend originally told police the girl had been shot during an attempted robbery.
Bickley's Uncle says he spoke with detectives who say the boyfriend confessed to accidently shooting her while playing with a gun. Police say the 17-year-old died after being shot around 2:00 Saturday morning on Holder Drive. Her boyfriend originally told police the two were there to deliver money to a friend who didn't answer the door.
After they returned to their car, he reportedly told investigators a stranger approached, pointed a gun at Bickley, and fired.
After the shooting, investigators say the boy drove two blocks away where he flagged down police in front of Bernel Huskey's home on Broad Street. EMS pulled Bickley out of the car. She died on scene.
"It was nerve wracking. but I was mostly just sad to see something like that going on. You know with someone just, dying out there, in my yard," Huskey says.
Police confirm that Bickley did have a criminal record. Her family says she just returned to school after dropping out and hoped to pursue a nursing degree.
WCCB reached out to Shelby Police Saturday night, but they have not yet confirmed what family members told us. Anyone who might have more information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-481-TIPS (8477).
