ROWAN COUNTY, NC -- Investigators have released the name of the pilot killed when his ultralight airplane crashed in Rowan County on Sunday.

Cecil Dwayne Brown's plane came down shortly before 6 p.m. near Granite Quarry.

Authorities say 49-year-old Brown of Faith was the only person on the plane. Brown's family says he died, doing what he loved.

"This was his normal Sunday routine and some times I would accompany him. He was experienced, he was passionate and he will be missed" Darrin Brown said about his brother.

"He was truly a wonderful person who as his 17 year nephew describes "saw the world as a playground. Not only was he my brother but he was truly my best friend."

Some neighbors said they saw the plane go down into a field after it appeared to have engine problems.

County emergency services chief Frank Thomason said the plane had departed from Rowan County Airport shortly before the crash. He says the pilot is thought to have been going to a location near High Rock Lake.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
