Father Dead in Overnight SWAT Situation

by WCCB Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- An argument between a father and son led to a deadly SWAT situation in Northeast Charlotte.

CMPD Detectives arrived to the 2500 block of Penninger Circle around 1:15 Saturday morning. The caller said he and his father got into an argument and his father shot at him. Police were told that the suspect barricaded himself inside the home.

SWAT negotiators made contact with the father by phone and made efforts to have him surrender peacefully. He told the SWAT team he would not be taken alive.

As the SWAT team set up a perimeter around the residence, the father came out with two handguns, pointed in the direction of the officers.

A SWAT officer fired his service rile when the suspect approached the officers. MEDIC pronounced him dead at the scene. The father was identified as Lemuel Rufus Furr, 59.

Detectives with the Internal Affairs Unit will conduct a separate but parallel investigation to determine whether or not CMPD policies and procedures were adhered to during the course of the incident.

Crime Scene Search responded to the call for service to process the scene and collect physical evidence.  Representatives of the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Homicide Prosecution Team, Internal Affairs, K-9 Unit, RTCC, Vice and Gang Unit, SWAT Unit and Police Attorney's Office responded to the scene.
