CHARLOTTE, NC- Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been spent on lawn signs, billboards, and bumper stickers all over the state. In Charlotte, there's a lawn sign almost everywhere you look. "I've got one in my yard that says Amendment one harms children. Vote against," said John Stotler, boar char of the LGBT Community Center. The center is getting their message out to vote against the amendment with pledge statements, fliers, emails, newsletters, and events. "We've literally had hundreds of signs and given away just about all of them. We've had some local businesses that have come and taken a bunch so they can help distribute them," said Stotler. Local pastors and politicians are also are hosting events across the city and state. Including Reverend Mark Harris, who’s pastor of First Baptist Church of Charlotte and head of the state Baptist Convention and it's push to restrict gay marriage. "I think you're going to see more and more effort. I'm personally going to preach on April 29 on the issue itself and why it is of biblical proportions and really of critical decision time in the life of our state," said Harris. Just like any other election season, First Baptist Church has chosen not to put any political signs outside their church, but they did give out over 4,000 bumper stickers and yard signs to the congregation. "There will be more that are coming in the days ahead," said Harris. "I think our calls will increase. I think the amount of people who want to get involved will increase,” said Stotler. While they may be divided on Amendment one, supporters and opponents both hope educated voters turn out on Election Day. Election day is May 8. Early voting starts on Thursday.
