Final Push for Charlotte X Games Bid
FORT MILL, SC - I've always wanted the sport to grow as much as possible in the east coast and in Charlotte," explains Fort Mill, SC resident Chuck Powell.
Powell spent father's day afternoon skateboarding with his kids and passing on his love of the sport.
"It's a mindblowing experience, it's kind of like a roller coaster," says Powell's son Nathan.
Powell is one of several grassroots supporters trying to make Charlotte the new host city for the X Games.
"It's a pretty big deal, not just regionally or nationally, but actually internationally, people watch it from all over the world," he explains.
But the Queen City's got some catching up to do, at least online.
Right now over 20,000 people have voted for Detroit.. almost 14,000 for Austin.
Charlotte sits in third with just over 8,000.
And there are only around 800 people voting for Chicago.
But Powell says Charlotte shouldn't give up.
He says the east coast would be the best place to draw new interest.
"Do they want to go to a city that there's already a pretty big base, or do they want to go somewhere where the could actually grow the different types of extreme sports?" he asks.
ESPN officials will make the final X Games decision.
