Gastonia Officer Involved ShootingGASTONIA, NC -- Two Gastonia Police officers were involved in the fatal shooting of a Gastonia man Friday night. According to authorities, the call came in around 9 p.m. on 916 E. Ninth Ave. Upon arrival officers say Judy Glaze, 48, was choked by her brother, 50-year-old Kenneth Glaze. Ms. Glaze’s boyfriend Scotty Somerset, 41, of the streets of Gastonia, was also slapped in the incident. Mr. Glaze assaulted them both a second time, this time using hedge shears, and the victims left the home and called police. When additional officers arrived at 916 E. Ninth Ave. they had a confrontation with Mr. Glaze in the backyard. During a struggle for one of the officers’ handguns, shots were fired which fatally wounded Mr. Glaze. The State Bureau of Investigation has been called to investigate and will present the investigation to the District Attorney. The Gastonia Police Department Office of Professional Standards is also conducting an administrative investigation. Both officers have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure. Officer Watts, 34, is a veteran police officer who has worked with the department since September 1999. Officer Kistler, 24, has three years of service with GPD, having been hired in May 2009. Both are assigned to the Patrol Division in the Central District. |
