Group Proposes Gas Tax Increase In South Carolina

FORT MILL, SC--Latrese Bristol drives to the South Carolina state line once a week to fill up her gas tank. "I like to count my bucks...so it saves...even if it's a drive out here...I still save," said the East Charlotte resident. But, the 15 mile drive that saves her 19 cents per gallon could soon be a thing of the past if a South Carolina group succeeds in lobbying for a gas tax increase. "It would put a damper on things...you can't go anywhere," said Bristol.

S.C. Alliance to Fix Our Roads says more than a billion dollars is needed to fix congested interstates, potholes and over a thousand bridges with structural problems. Kristen Lominack is the group's Associate Director. She said, "What you would pay at the pump up front would be far less than what you pay for your vehicle repairs and your time lost from work and those things when you're at congestion."

"Sometimes I wonder if I spend 5 dollars  to save three dollars driving out here," said South Charlotte resident Scott Davis. Davis is hoping the third lowest gas tax in the U.S. won't increase anytime soon.
"I'll be in touch. I'll be watching. See what happens," he said.

S.C. Alliance To Fix Our Roads said the Motor Fuel User Fee has remained at 16 cents per gallon since 1987. The group says that's far below North Carolina and Georgia.
