CHARLOTTE, N.C. - In the southeast it is crucial to protect your pets against heartworm disease.  Preventitive medicine is readily available, but there's a shortage of treatment medications.  Animal hospitals can't order enough to keep on the shelves and instead is it distributed on a case by case basis.  That is one reason that Vets suggest using heartworm preventative medicine year round.
