Its a home remodel project gone terribly wrong in the Belmont neighborhood. Gary Wilson lives next door, and says he heard a gun shot, then saw a bunch of commotion. "When I woke up, I thought I heard a bang, cause I always step out on the porch to see what's going on," says Wilson. Police say forty year old Matthew Hawkins bought this house on East 17th Street with plans to fix it up, and flip it. "They've been in there, working on it, for two to three months, I go ride by there every day," says Wilson. Police say Hawkins was inside working on the house Tuesday when someone walked in and tried to rob him. Wilsons remembers talking to Hawkins about the construction just a few days ago. "You all are doing a job on this house, and he said we're trying to fix it up I figured they were working on it," says Wilson. Police say the suspect shot Hawkins in the eye after he robbed the victim of twenty dollars. People who live in the South Charlotte neighborhood he calls home, are praying he makes it through. "He was always such a nice guy, always playing with his little boy and his girlfriends kids," says Ashley Austin. The victim remains at CMC in critical condition.
