YORK COUNTY, S.C.-- A husband is behind bars, his wife in the hospital after deputies say he stabbed her with a sword from his walking cane.

Phillip Demdro Perry, 63, was arrested early Wednesday morning near his home on Ginn Road in McConnells, and charged with one count of attempted murder and one count of possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

According to deputies, Gercene Perry, 42, called 911 around 1 a.m. saying that her husband was trying to stab her. Dispatch reported hearing screaming and someone in the background yelling that someone had been stabbed.

Deputies arrived and found Perry in her bedroom being guarded by her niece holding a chef's knife. Perry told officials her husband stabbed her with a sword from his walking cane. She fought back and struck him with the scabbard of the sword over his head.

There were several adult witnesses and a four year old girl inside the home at the time of the incident. Ms. Perry was taken to Carolinas Medical Center Main for treatment.
