Increased Security At This Year's Speed Street

by WCCB Charlotte

CHARLOTTE,NC--Police say backpacks will be allowed at this year's speed street in uptown despite the Boston bombings.

Authorities say attendees at the event can expect a strong police presence.

The three day festival that will kick off in two weeks has been declared an extraordinary event for the second year in a row.

The label means items like knives and aerosol cans will be banned from the grounds.

Police at the event say they will question people acting suspiciously and will search items if necessary.

Two years ago a shooting left one person dead after Speed Street ended. Men Who Care Global say they will attend the event again to keep an eye on teens in the crowd.
