Jaywalking Campaign Raises Awareness of Traffic Laws
Charlotte, NC - Louis Deas admits to jaywalking. Deas says, "I'm a New Yorker at heart, I know how to cross the street." Even though it's against the law. Deas says, "I'm safe, I know what I'm doing, I look both ways, 2, 3 times, and whenever no cars are coming." Cops hope their crackdown gets Deas to change his ways. Officer Mike Tinsley of CMPD says, "People darting out into traffic, thinking if they get hit, they get hit." Tinsley issued nearly two-hundred tickets in two weeks to pedestrians and drivers at the intersection of Fourth and College Streets, and Tryon and Third. Tinsley, "We're not giving citations to people who are crossing when it's clear, its those that are creating an unsafe environment." Just last week, a man was hit by a car, while riding his moped on College Street. CMPD hopes the campaign creates awareness before thousands of out of towners pack out streets for the DNC. Tinsley says, "We're going to have a lot of visitors that are not familiar with downtown and are not paying attention." Officers want Charlotte drivers and pedestrians to know the road rules, so everything runs smoothly during the convention.
