Keeping A Nice Yard Through The Winter MonthsCHARLOTTE, N.C.- Before the brisk cold weather makes it's mark on Charlotte, think about giving your lawn some T-L-C. You can keep your yard looking great through the winter season. Bernadette Farace just tore out her dying summer flowers and is getting ready to plant something that can brave colder weather, "I believe pansies are more hearty and they'll get us through the winter so if we have frost we're good with pansies." Jonathon Joyner is the assistant manager for Pike Nursery. He says if you want a fall flower bed start planting now, "Getting them in before it gets too awfully cold is definitely going to help make a fuller flower and withstand some of the colder temps." Now's also the time to seed your lawn. Joyner says it's okay to run your mower over a light layer of leaves, "Instead of packing the leaves up in the yard, you're shredding them up, therefore they can break up a lot easier and not cause yellow spots in the grass." He says after you mow you can also try dethatching your yard. By running a rake over your grass it will open up places to reseed. The best time to dethatch your lawn is in the early fall. This will help limit weed germination, reduce water evaporation and protect frost damage." Joyner recommends raking often. He says the longer leaves stay on your yard the worse it's going to be, "When leaves fall in the year it's causing poor air circulation, there's no sunlight being able to get to it. Therefore it's going to have bare spots." |
