Laptops Thefts on the Rise
Charlotte - Michael Hill watches his laptop like a hawk. Michael Hill says, "Mine, I have it everywhere with me, it's always in sight." And before he started at CPCC, he was warned about an increase in laptop thefts. Michael Hill says, "I never say, hey can you watch my computer, or leave it here cause its an expensive piece of equipment." Just last week, computer service tech Chris Finley says a customer brought in a stolen laptop to his shop, trying to get the password changed. Chris Finley says, "We turned it on, and it said I'm stolen and my name is such and such, please call me at this." Finley says the laptop had been stolen in New York, and ended up here. It had special software that detected it was stolen, and was returned to the owner. Finley says, "That's how a lot of them get caught, they try to resell it, or they try to get it fixed." Finley sees stolen electronics all the time. Finley says, "I see 90% of laptops that are getting stolen." There are new ways to lock and alarm your laptop, from software that tracks its location via gps, to external alarms that use the usb port. They go off if someone unplugs them.
