Local Girl Looks To Team USA Karting And Big CashMOORESVILLE, NC- 50,000 bucks and a spot on team USA! Big goals, but they're in reach for 13-year-old Kaitlyn Melton who describes competive go-karting as an 80 miles per hour adrenaline rush. "I'm pretty much out on the track every weekend and i donate a lot of my time to this kart and i don't care because i love it. it's my sport and my who family supports me," said Melton, a Lancaster, SC resident. Melton has been racing since age six, but now she's pushing herself and her cart to the limits. She wants to win the rotax max challenge to qualify as a team u-s-a junior racer. "I can just talk about it. i have to go prove it out on the track that i'm as fast as they are," said Melton. Melton is the only girl practicing out here on the track today and that's not unusual. When she heads to nationals in August, she'll be one of less than 10 girls competing against more than 50 go-karters. "I actually like being the only girl. it kind of shows the guys that i can be one of them too and they don't have to treat me like a girl because i can actually go out there and win," said Melton. Melton's coach says a ride to the top takes commitment. She's already switched from a public school to online classes to allow for more racing around the country. "She wants to be in the front. she wants to race some of the best guys in the country and she wants to beat them. so, as long as she remains head strong, i'll have no doubt she'll succeed," said Evan York, Kaitlyn's driving coach. For the 13 year-old karter, success means a career in racing cars when she hits 18. |
