Local Homeless Man Known As Chilly Willy Dies After Being Struck By CarCHARLOTTE, N.C.--Police are investigating a fatal accident that happened on E. 7th Street Thursday night. Investigators say William Major was attempting to cross E. 7th St. when he was struck and killed. The car was traveling in the right outbound lane when Major walked into the roadway from the vehicle’s right side. The driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene and called 911. She remained at the scene until police arrived. Major was transported to the hospital by Medic. He died at approximately 9:30pm. The driver has not been charged at this time, but the investigation is on-going. Fifty-eight-year-old Major is known by most Charlotteans as "Chilly Willy." He has been a fixture on Charlotte streets as he is known for his singing and panhandling. He has struggled with alcoholism and homelessness for years but was working on staying clean in the last several months. The section of East 7th Street where Major was struck has been the scene of other pedestrian involved crashes.
