MATTHEWS, NC- Some teens join a school club... others get a part-time job.

But one local teen just opened her own restaurant.

"I don't want to be normal. I don't want to be average, so I wanted to do something out of the box," said Mena Effot, a senior at East Mecklenburg High School.

That's Effot's motivation for Mena's Grill. A new Mediterranean take-out restaurant - owned and operated by her.

"If you don't risk it, you never know if you'll might make it or not," said Effot.

Effot says her biggest risk was taking all the money she made selling electronics on Ebay and selling a family property in Egypt to invest in a business.

"It's beneficial to me in the long run. I don't want to just waste my money on something stupid," said Effot.

She's covering 90 percent of the costs and her parents are helping with the rest.

The restaurant is on East Independence Boulevard and Matthews Mint Hill Road in Matthews. Effot says she chose this location because it's a high traffic area and the small space has an affordable rent.

"When you first start out, it's so hard because not a lot of people know about this place," said Effot.

She says her  strategy is to keep prices low to attract customers who normally eat fast food. She also cuts cost because her family cooks all the food.  Right now, nothing is over seven bucks.

"If I do get enough money, then I definitely will expand into a dining place instead of just being take-out," said Effot.

Mena says she's looking at local colleges and universities so she can still manage the restaurant after graduation.
