CATAWBA CO, NC - The Catawba County man accused of killing his girlfriend's 20-month-old son and abusing her daughter, made his first court appearance Monday.

William Lail, 25,  cringed  and fought tears as a judge read the murder and child abuse charges out loud in Catawba County court Monday.

Lail was babysitting his girlfriend's children at her home on 25th Street Northwest in Long View on Friday - when something went wrong.

He called 911 screaming for help. Long View Police released the call Monday.

Dispatcher: "Is he breathing at all?"
Lail: "No. He's not breathing. I was trying to give him CPR but I don't have a phone to call. Please hurry."

According to a warrant, officers found 20-month-old Jaydon dead with bruising on his forehead and burns on his back and legs. His three-year-old sister Kylie had burns on her back.

Lail walked out of the courtroom in tears and so did his family, who didn't want to talk about the case.

The family of Jaydon and Kylie were at the courthouse today, but didn't want to comment. They did not go inside the courtroom when Lail was making his appearance.

The children's grandmother told WCCB on Saturday that the family wants justice.

Lail is being held in the Catawba County Jail without bond. He's due back in court for another hearing on May 17.
