CONCORD, NC -- A Kannapolis teen was arrested and charged after damaging grave markers at the Oakwood Cemetery.
According to police, around 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, they responded to a report of a man damaging grave markers at the Oakwood Cemetery located on Church Street North in Concord. Officers arrived and confronted the man who was found to be armed with an axe and a machete. The man complied with commands from officers and was taken into custody without incident.
A number of grave markers and associated accessories were found to have been damaged. Authorities are working to document the damage and begin notification of affected families. Afdal Azam Ali Leach has been initially charged with four counts of felony Defacing or Desecrating a Grave Site. More charges are expected. As many as 75 different graves sites may have been damaged to varying degrees.
