BELMONT, NC -- A vehicle matching the description of a missing Belmont woman's car has been found with a deceased female's body inside according to authorities. Belmont Police Department say they were informed that the 1998 Chevy Lumina belonging to Elizabeth Stonger was found in McDowell County on Monday.

McDowell Detectives found the car and the body in a ravine when they were investigating an illegal dumping call. They say the vehicle was positively identified by the registration tag and the vehicle’s VIN.

Ms. Stonger was reported missing on October 14, 2012 after leaving her job at Wal-Mart. Belmont Police Department in conjunction with several state and local agencies has been looking for Stonger in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Special attention was given to the McDowell County area.

The Belmont Police Department had been focusing on the McDowell County area because of information provided from Stonger’s cell phone provider. Upon the request of law enforcement the cell phone provider “pinged” Stonger’s phone. The last known location of the phone was McDowell County.

Belmont investigators are on the scene at this time and are working with the McDowell County Sheriff’s Department.

Further information will be released as it becomes available.
