Neighbors Stunned by Murder of Missing Statesville Man
STATESVILLE, NC - "It's just hard to imagine anyone would have wanted to do him any harm. He's just a gentle giant," says neighbor David Brigman.
Friends and neighbors are remembering 88-year-old Lindsey Stikeleather.
The Statesville man.. missing for over two days.. was found murdered off Eufola Road near Lynns Lane.
"I don't know why somebody would do something like that to him, it's just a bad thing," explains neighbor Steeven Eagle.
Investigators charged Bobby Jackson, Jr. with murder.. kidnapping.. and robbery.
He has a prior arrest record including DWI and assault.
Stikeleather was last seen Monday afternoon at a bank in Statesville.
Detectives say Jackson had asked his former landlord for help with with his broken moped... and planned to meet him at the bank.
"Even though the guy owed him money, he still went to help the guy because he called him for help. That's the kind of person we're talking about. He would have done anything for anybody. It's just senseless. Senseless," says neighbor Theresa Sloan.
The body was discovered about a mile west of where Stikeleather's abandoned truck was found in Western Iredell County.
"It's just a bad thing. he was trying to help someone and then they turn around and do something like that to him," Eagle says.
Neighbors say Stikeleather often shared vegetables from his garden and... the great grandfather also plowed their driveways when it snowed.
"Just stunned that such a thing could happen to such a good man. Great person. He will be sorely missed," Brigman says.
