New Bus Route Causing Headaches For East Charlotte Residents
CHARLOTTE, N.C.--Aquana Saunders is thankful the Charlotte Area Rapid Transit System re-routed its buses to accomodate Walmart customers like her, "Now its right here in the parking lot so its easier for me to get to and from work and its easier for customers who come shopping with a lot of bags and don't have to walk far," said the South Charlotte resident.
But, because CATS says its unsafe for buses to leave the Walmart parking lot using Independence Boulevard, they are now cutting through nearby neighborhoods.
As a result Ed Garber of the Eastside PAC says there are no bus stops, no sidewalks and bus riders are waiting in his neighbor's front yards, "They're just bending the rules and it's not working in my neighborhood's favor," he said.
John Siebert said the buses zooming in front of his house are dangerous for his daughter,
N.C.D.O.T. is monitoring Walmart's Independence exit. Unless there's an increase in crashes, they won't alter the off-ramp.
"A lot of neighbors have kids outside playing and they may get hit and I just don't think its a good idea, said Saunders.
Walmart didn't return our requests for comment.
