Newton Murder Suspect Lived in Same Apartment Complex with Victim
NEWTON, NC - Maggie Daniels' neighbors were shaken up to learn the suspect arrested in her murder lived in the same apartment complex with them.
Sharman Odom's neighbor says she first became suspicious right after Daniels' death. "He had been sitting on the porch all the time and then after that happened, I never seen him there again," she says.
Saturday, police arrested Odom in Winston-Salem. WCCB discovered he does have an arrest record in Mecklenburg County. In August of 2012 he was charged with robbery, assault by strangulation, and second degree rape. No word if he was convicted on those charges.
"It's sort of crazy how he only lived like two doors down and you'd never guess it," says neighbor Jaden Weaver. Weaver says the arrest gives neighbors here a sense of relief. "Because he's off the streets. He can't hurt you no more. Just feel better and safer," Weaver says.
The murder shook up the city of Newton when a friend found the 31-year-old counselor dead in her apartment on June 28th. Daniels was well-known in the community as an avid runner and as former basketball coach at Newton-Conover High School. She was named teacher of the year in 2011 and recently moved to Discovery High to become a guidance counselor.
"I think the family deserves to know who did this to her. I think everybody deserves to know," Weaver says.
