Oaklawn Language Academy
Charlotte, NC - Even with the doors closed, you can hear the learning that's happening at Oaklawn Language Academy. The school sits in a neighborhood that many frown on, but what's happening inside the school is putting a smile and parents and students faces. That's part of why Oaklawn was just named the best Magnet School in the country.
Tamika Robinson's daughter is a fifth grader at Oaklawn. She says, the focus on language sets the school apart. However, its the high academic standards and innovative teaching that makes it an example to other schools. Robinson say, it all starts with Principal, Carmen Concepcion. In her first year leading Oaklawn, Concepcion brought in this years prize as the best magnet school in the country. Concepcion says, “Parents need to be partners in education with us. We definitely need that to happen to be successful."
Stacy Johnson's son has attended other schools before Oaklawn. But Johnson says, that parental engagement that Concepcion speaks of is a key difference between Oaklawn and other schools. He say, "If my son has a problem, they call my house and let me know what's going on and what they can do to help."
Ms. Conception also points out the mix of native English and Spanish speakers. She says the fact that they're learning together is a big deal. "They have their Spanish to give and the English speaking students have English to give, so i think there's a level playing field."
Tamika Robinson says, “My child soaked it up like a sponge and its rubbing off on other kids and all of them are learning, its just different." For the Oaklawn Language Academy community, that difference earned it the honor of being the best Magnet School in the country.
