Park The Right Way Or Pay
CHARLOTTE, NC- In Plaza Midwood there's a right way to park and there's a wrong way to park. In the newly finished parking spots along Commonwealth the right way is in reverse and in the coming weeks, pulling straight in will cost you. Still, backing it up is a tough sell.
The City hopes back-in only spots will make busy Commonwealth Avenue safer. But there's one catch, they've got to get local drivers to do it. The main complaints among drivers is they don't feel like doing extra work and some of them say they don't notice the signs.
Blake Barnes owns The Common Market right behind the new reverse-only spots. He says ignoring the signs is nothing new, "One hundred percent it is confusing; if you pull in like you naturally would, now your trying to back across two lanes of traffic."
Since the violation fee isn't doing the trick, the City commissioned a rap song to help roll out the parking. Barnes says it's going to take more than a rap song for locals to get used to reversing, "I put it in reverse, this woman comes flying right behind me big SUV, and all of sudden middle finger flying she is yelling and I'm like I am doing what you told me to do."
Angry drivers aside, reverse parking is no longer an option, it's the law. Charlotte's Department of Transportation says in the next few weeks they'll be giving out warnings to vehicles parked incorrectly. But starting April 1st people who don't back up in reverse parking spots with get a ticket.
