Preliminary Results Released in CMPD Officer's DeathCHARLOTTE, N.C.--We know more about what led to the death of a CMPD SWAT officer last month. Fred Thornton died when a "distraction device" went off in his garage in Mint Hill. A preliminary investigation shows Thornton removed a pin from the device while serving a warrant earlier in the day. He put the pin partially back in then apparently tried to replace it when he got home. That's when the device went off.
