QC Could Get First Indoor Shooting Range
CHARLOTTE, NC- Zach Brown has to travel over 30 minutes when he wants to shoot. He says an indoor range near home is just what he needs.
"The need is great. It's super high. Recreationally, it's something to do that's fun and it also helps people to understand the safety behind firearms,” said Brown.
Carolina Sporting Arms wants to add a 4,000 square foot indoor shooting facility behind its store on South Boulevard, which would be the first in Charlotte.
"We get a massive amount of people who obviously are buying guns in today's age and they a heart felt desire to train, to take concealed weapons courses so they can carry their gun," said Donald Ingram, manager or Carolina Sporting Arms.
Over the past year Mecklenburg County has issued 12,000 gun permits.
City councilman Andy Dulin says the facility is needed and doesn't see it bringing any community safety issues.
"These are card carrying, second amendment supporting gun owners that want to use their guns and practice with their guns in a safe manner," said Dulin.
An indoor shooting range is not covered under the city's current zoning ordinance. So by default, the planning department says this type of facility is only allowed in certain industrial areas of charlotte.
So, as it stands right now... Carolina sporting arm's land does not fit that criteria.
Carolina Sporting Arms is asking the city to amend that ordinance to allow an indoor range at their business and in other parts of the city.
City council will hear from the public on June 18. They'll vote on the amendment next month.
