Charlotte, NC - "This could be a blood bath out there, that's the way I'm looking at it." Those are the words of Vietnam veteran Steve Hipsley, talking about South Carolina's free hunting days on Friday and Saturday.

Captain Sandy Young with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources says, "The idea was to encourage some of our residents of South Carolina to get outdoors and enjoy the resources in South Carolina."

At local hunting shops rookie and seasoned hunters are gearing up. While no South Carolina hunting license is required, law enforcement will be checking for federal licenses when appropriate. That's something Captain Young says inexperienced hunters may not think about. Those are the people Hipsley is worried about. He says, “This prompts a lot of people to get out here and get the bang, bang bang going without the cost of hunting license and without the thought of other hunters safety involved."

Captain Young's response? "Sure, safety is an issue anytime, but the only way to learn is to get out and do it . Hopefully they do it in a responsible way." Young also says, many people are assuming this free hunting period is an extension of deer season, which ended early this week. The punishment for hunting deer out of season is a minimum 250 dollar fine.
