Spencer Woman Murdered Outside Her Home, Suspect In Police Custody
UPDATE: Police arrested Rodney Wallace in Wrightsville Beach. He is expected to be charged in the death of Toney Johnson.
SPENCER, NC -- A woman murdered outside her home. Her ex-husband, Rodney Wallace, is the suspected killer. The convicted felon is now on the run. Police say he may have a weapon and should be considered extremely dangerous.
Neighbors are rattled by a murder on the 700 block of 4th Street in Spencer. They heard a woman screaming just before nine o'clock this morning. Somebody called 911.
"I didn't really know what happened. I saw that tape, and I know that when you see that like that, you usually know that there's been a murder," says Joanne McKinney, who lives across the street.
"I was taking my husband to work and we heard the ambulances coming in," says Sandra Shuping, who lives in the neighborhood. "So when I come back, I just stopped to check on her. And it's been a lot of people have been coming to see what's going on."
Sandra Shuping's daughter lives just down the street from where Toney Ann Johnson died, her body left in the grass between two houses for most of the day. The street was closed for hours as Spencer Police, the Rowan County Sheriff's Office and the State Bureau of Investigation worked the crime scene and interviewed neighbors.
And police quickly named a suspect: 47-year old Rodney Wallace. He's Johnson's ex-husband. Neighbors say the former couple have a child together.
Wallace is a convicted felon, currently on probation for assault on a female and domestic criminal trespass convictions.
Spencer Police say Rodney Wallace may be driving a black Mazda Protege. If you see him, call Rowan-Salisbury Crime Stoppers at 1-866-639-5245.
