ALEXANDER COUNTY, NC -- The parents of a 7-year-old child that brought a loaded hand gun to school are in custody according to authorities. The Alexander County Sheriff's Office has arrested and charged both Timothy Mounts, 36, and Kimberly Setzer, 41, with one count each for failure to store a firearm to protect a minor.

According to school officials, the first grade student brought the gun to lunch at Sugar Loaf Elementary School on Thursday. Staff members were able to seize the weapon but law officials were called to ensure there were no other weapons on campus.

Disciplinary action by the Alexander County School System and charges by law enforcement are pending in the case.
