Sunscreen Could Protect Your Manicured Hands from Skin Cancer
CHARLOTTE, NC-When you get a gel manicure at Matrix salon in Dilworth, sunscreen is part of the routine. Salon owner Dinh Trinh says, "They said what are you putting on my hand, I said, sunscreen, its to protect you so you don't get skin cancer." Salon owner Dinh Trinh says its the least she can do to protect her clients. Trinh says, "The UV is just like a tanning bed, so I thought about the light is so bright on them." Briana Kalbech comes every two weeks for a gel manicure. Kalbech says, "I would recommend not getting it done unless sunscreen is on my hands, its not a risk i'm willing to take." Doctors say they aren't as worried about people who stick their hands under the light for the first time, but it's those who have it done every two or three weeks that causes concern." Doctor Ronea Harris-Stith says, "Exposure over time can lead and contribute to skin cancer." Two women in other states have been diagnosed with skin cancer that was directly related to drying their nails under the UV light. Dr. Harris-Stith says, "Its so routine that you're not thinking about the hazards because its not immediate that you would see the effects." Dermatologist Ronea Harris-Stith says what the salon technicians at Matrix are doing, is saving lives.
