Recycling bottles, cans and paper reduces harmful effects on landfills but food you throw away can cause harm as well.

Gaye Walden recently started composting and says it's not hard at all, "There's a lot of waste that accumulates and I feel guilty putting in a trash can.  It needs to go back in the earth."

Phil Haynes with 360 Compost says composting can help reduce air pollution,"Food can break down in a landfill but it will also produce a very dangerous greenhouse gas called methane."

He says composting goes beyond just vegetable and fruit scraps.  Any organic household product can be composted, "Paper towels, toilet paper roll holders, paper towel holders. Anything that's of an organic nature."

Haynes says do not compost meat, bones, and cheeses it takes more time to break down and brings bugs.

The great part about composting is watching it come full circle.  Kitchen scraps can provide nutrient rich organic fertilizer for gardens and lawns.
