Children Trapped, Killed Underground Identified
STANLEY, N.C. -- UPDATE: Officials released the identities of the the two children killed in a hole at a construction site.
James Levi Caldwell, 7, of Stanley and Chloe Jade Arwood, 6, of Gastonia were helping Caldwell's father while he was excavating a pit on their property.
The sheriff's department is following up on reports that the father was in the process of building an underground protective bunker.
The two children were cousins.
According to authorities, the children were in a hole about 24-feet underground at a home on Cedarbrook Court.
Members from Charlotte Urban Search and Rescue assisted Lincoln County fire department in the search. More than 100 emergency workers responded to the scene.
This incident is still under investigation. The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office will be the lead investigative agency.
