Vet Clinic Owner Regrets Calling Cops After TheftCHARLOTTE, N.C. - A six foot long deep freezer stood outside The Carolinas Animal Hospital in southwest Charlotte until just a few days ago. Dr. Katherine Queck says the locked cooler, which she'd had for years, was gone Thursday morning. Queck decided to call the police to file a report. And she says that's when the trouble really started. The public police report lists the contents inside the cooler as $600 worth of "dog parts on a stick" and "cat parts on a stick." Queck says, "Which was totally not true. What was in the freezer were some cadaver specimens that we use for our oral surgery labs." Queck teaches other vets how to perform animal dental work. They practice on purchased animal cadavers. Queck says concerned clients called when they saw the first media reports, worried about those seemingly macabre contents. "It really shed us in a very poor light. It implied that we were desecrating bodies which is totally not true," she says. Queck says she doesn't know where the officer got the "body parts on a stick" description. We reached out to him but haven't heard back. In the meantime, Queck is doing damage control, making sure people know the real story of what was in the cooler. She says, "I thought the proper thing to do was to contact the police. But as it turned out, I wish now I had not." Queck says veterinarians are required by law to have a freezer in case they have to euthanize a pet after hours. She will purchase a smaller, indoor freezer to replace the stolen one. |
